Gravel Mine Proposal: What’s at Stake for Watkins Lake and the Irish Hills
A proposal to build a 625-acre (nearly one square mile) sand and gravel mine just over a mile from Holler Fest has raised concerns throughout the Irish Hills community. If approved, the mine would operate for 20 years, extracting up to 20 million tons of sand and gravel immediately adjacent to Watkins Lake State Park & County Preserve, a designated bird refuge that is also home to globally rare prairie fens.
Join Emily Jade Foley, Communications Chair of Irish Hills Concerned Citizens (IHCC) for a brief overview of the proposed mine, its potential impacts on the surrounding area, and the grassroots community effort to protect Watkins Lake and the Irish Hills.

Fighting Line 5, America’s Most Dangerous Pipeline: with Andy Buchsbaum Line 5 carries up to 23 million gallons of oil and gas through tribal reservations and along the bottom of the Straits of Mackinac. It is over 70 years old, has never been replaced, and has been hit and damaged by ships’ anchors multiple times. Tribal authorities and Michigan’s governor have ordered it to be shut down, but its owner, Enbridge Energy, has fought them in court. Enbridge also has proposed putting the pipeline in a tunnel underneath the lakebed– despite the risk of collapse and explosion and the destruction of tribal burial grounds. Federal agencies, the U.S. State Department, the government of Canada, and even the U.N. have gotten involved. In the past month, three major court and agency decisions have come down that substantially change the forecast for the future. Get the latest update and learn what you can do to combat this pipeline, which Governor Whitmer calls a ticking time bomb in the Great Lakes.”
Andy Buchsbaum directed the Great Lakes office for the National Wildlife Federation and has been fighting Line 5 for over 14 years. He now teaches environmental law courses at UM law school and represents NWF in litigation against Enbridge.

Fostering Intentional Communities, with Professor of Ecology Mark Ott
Humans need other humans, it’s just a fact of our biology. We are ‘pack’ animals who only thrive when we have other people to support us, laugh with us, and help us in our times of need.Modern society, with social media and world headlines, clouds the relationships that should matter most, those with the people who are literally closest to us in time and space.During this talk, we will discuss the historical importance of the good kind of ‘tribal thinking’ and how we can get back to making real connections with people to foster more dependable and resilient communities.
